Hoon Yub Kim, MD, PhD (Endoscopic & Robotic Thyroid Surgery)

Dr. Hoon Yub Kim, M.D., Ph.D., is the endocrine surgeon who now serves as the associate professor of surgery in Korea University, Seoul, Korea. He graduated from Seoul National University Medical College, Seoul, Korea, to earn his M.D. and later his Ph.D., and was trained in Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul, Korea, as the full rotating intern and surgical resident to join the Board of Surgery in Korea. Before joining Korea University College of Medicine as the full-time faculty, he underwent endocrine surgery fellowship courses in Seoul National University Hospital and Korea University Hospital.

Nowadays, more than 90% of the patients in Dr. Kim’s clinic are those who have thyroid cancers, suspicious malignant or indeterminate thyroid nodules, and those who suffer from hyperthyroidism such as Graves' disease or toxic thyroid nodule. The rest of his patients are those with adrenal tumors, and those with functional or morphological parathyroid diseases. 

Dr. Kim’s major academic interests for the research are the thyroid cancer and the related surgery, and in recent years, his research mainly focuses on the preservation of function of the laryngeal nerves with intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) during thyroid surgery, and development of robotic transoral thyroid surgery that might be referred as the NOTES (Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery) for thyroid gland, which, in turn, enabled him to perform the successful robotic transoral thyroidectomy in the real living patient primally in the world. As the result, more than 60 articles which he had authored have been published in the various peer-reviewed journals to date, and the number of the publication is rapidly increasing recently.
