Prof. David Watson is Professor and Head of the Flinders University Department of Surgery, and an Esophago-Gastric Surgeon at Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide, South Australia. He undertakes clinical and laboratory research addressing benign and malignant esophageal and gastric disease, with interests including gastro-esophageal reflux, and esophageal and gastric cancer. With colleagues in Australia, he has been active in the development and refinement of laparoscopic and endoscopic surgical techniques addressing this area of surgery, and he has led 15 randomized controlled trials addressing refinements pertinent to laparoscopic surgery for the esophagus and stomach. 

Prof. Watson has published more than 350 papers and book chapters. He is a member of the Editorial Boards for many leading surgical journals including the British Journal of Surgery, Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, World Journal of Surgery and ANZ Journal of Surgery. His expertise has been recognized by award of the John Mitchell Crouch Fellowship, the highest research award from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, election as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences, and appointment to a Matthew Flinders Distinguished Professorship at Flinders University.
