Prof. Li was one of the pioneers in the development of laparoscopic surgery in Hong Kong and broke new grounds in the development of minimal access surgery that were later recognized as gold standard in surgical procedures. He is the founding President of the Hong Kong Society of Minimal Access Surgery and Asia Pacific Endo-Lap Surgery Group; he is also a forerunner in many surgical initiatives including the recent endo-laparoscopic surgery, a new technique recognized internationally as future standard in minimal access surgery.
Prof. Li is awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS) in 2013 for his outstanding achievement and valuable contribution to the medical sector and the development of the surgical field. Prof. Li has been appointed as Professor of Surgery in University Hospital of Strasbourg, Professor of Surgery in University College London and as Hunterian Professor (2009/10) at The Royal College of Surgeons of England, commending his unwavering contribution in surgical advancements. His forte is minimal access surgery with most noted experience for rectal cancers and robotic surgery; he is the founder for International Colorectal Disease Symposium in the Asia Pacific region, a biennial international surgical event highlighting major advances in the management of colorectal disease. This event has been hosted for its 7th time since 2002 and has become a representative flagship event across the border.
Prof. Li has appointed to steer general surgical trainees training; he is responsible for defining and standardizing surgical training to assure clinical skill competency of healthcare professionals. He is also very active in research work and has over 228 publications – including numerous award-winning papers.
Prof. Li has some honorary appointments in renowned institutions both locally and internationally to give advice on surgical developments. To name a few, he has appointed as President of Asia Pacific Endo-Lap Surgery Group (APELS), Secretary General of The Asian-Pacific Society for Digestive Endoscopy (A-PSDE), Council Member of Asia Endosurgery Task Force (AETF), Board Member of International Federation of Societies of Endoscopic Surgeons (IFSES) and Board of Governors of the Society of Endoscopic & Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia (ELSA).
